Explore the heart of France from your very own Burgundy holiday home

The Burgundy region is made up of the kind of endless rolling hills, tidy rows of grapevines and tree-lined roads that are most people's fantasy image of France. Located in the east of France, Burgundy is rightly famous for its wines, but there's so much more than vineyards and vino to this leafy, sun-dappled and historically fascinating corner of the world, and your very own Burgundy holiday home offers you the flexibility to explore this charming region at your leisure.

All about Burgundy

Whether you're looking for glorious scenery, cycling or hiking, delving into the area's history or simply sitting back with a fine wine, a Burgundy holiday apartment offers flexibility and comfort. The lush landscape is dotted with vineyards and studded with many historic towns and villages that you'll want to explore. And a holiday apartment in this wine region gives you the chance to soak up the atmosphere like a local.

Where to stay

There are a wide number of options for holiday accommodation in the famous wine-growing area of Burgundy. Whether you choose an apartment in town or a cottage in the countryside you are assured of the security, individuality and convenience of your very own home away from home. Situated on the heart of Burgundy's Côte d'Or the beautiful walled town of Beaune is the region's wine capital and makes for a great base from which to explore the region. If you're looking for something a little more 'rustique', then TUI Villas have a wide range of Burgundy holiday apartments, villas and cottages that offer privacy and comfort in the lush, rolling countryside.

Wines and vines

It doesn't matter if you know anything about wine or not, you owe it to yourself to enjoy at least a glass or two during your visit to the region as Burgundy is famous throughout the world for its wines. The dry red wine is made from Pinot Noir grapes, while the white variety is produced using Chardonnay vines. And keep an eye out for the Crémant - the local take on champagne - and do try a glass of Kir, a mix of white wine and a liqueur made from the blackcurrants that grow around Burgundy. There are a huge number of vineyards and the majority of them offer tours and tastings, so make sure you visit at least one.

Historic Burgundy

There are some fascinating towns and villages in the area, but perhaps one of the most intriguing is Vazeley. This picturesque town is well worth a visit just for its old world charm and for the views from the top of the hill that overlooks it. The real pull, however, is the Basilica of St Magdalene, where the bones of Mary Magdalene are said to rest. If all that seems a little distant, then check out the living history that's going on at Guédelon Castle in Treigny, where construction is underway on a brand new medieval castle. Using only techniques from the middle ages, work on the castle began in 1997 and is coming along nicely (if slowly).

Comfort and calm

A burgundy holiday home offers far more than just a place to drop your bags and catch some rest. Couples looking for a peaceful break will find a cottage in the countryside especially relaxing, while families with children will appreciate the fun, privacy and security of a villa with its very own pool. And for those looking for something a little more lively, apartments in towns like Auxerre or Dijon offer style, individuality and the convenience to enjoy the nightlife. Common to all of these holiday home options is the advantage of your very own kitchen - perfect for trying your hand at cooking up a local dish or just preparing packed lunches for a day trip.

Attractions near Burgundy

Whatever type of Burgundy holiday home you choose, you're sure to find plenty to see and do in the area, but if you do find yourself in need of a real change of pace, then bear in mind that the sights, culture and chic shopping areas of Paris are only a three-hour car journey away. Many of the towns in the Burgundy area are close to the Swiss border, making a day trip to the delightful town of Bern another great idea. If those are a little too far, then maybe a visit to Mont Beuvray is in order. This peak in the Morvan Regional Natural Park offers unparalleled views across the picturesque rural landscape below.

How to get there

The nearest airports to Burgundy are Paris Orly (ORY) and Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG). Orly is located to the south of Paris and therefore is marginally closer to Burgundy. It depends where exactly your Burgundy holiday home is located, but the journey from either airport should take around three hours.

When to visit

The summer months are the warmest and most popular times to visit Burgundy. If you're travelling during this period then you might want to book your Burgundy holiday home well ahead of time to make sure you get the type of accommodation that's just right for you. Another great time to visit the region is during September and October when the approaching autumn turns the area's many vineyards into a glorious patchwork of yellows, reds and browns. Temperatures in the early autumn months are usually around 20°C and the crowds will also have died down considerably.
